Technical Standards (A3.13e)

The foundation of success in the Physician Associate program at PBA PA Medicine is built upon the “Technical Standards,” a set of competencies that encapsulate the core knowledge, skills, and professional attributes required for graduation. Prior to enrollment, candidates are required to confirm their ability to meet these standards, a commitment that must be sustained throughout their educational journey. These standards are categorized into five essential areas, each reflecting a critical aspect of the professional competencies deemed necessary by the faculty and the broader physician assistant community.

Adherence to these Technical Standards is imperative; non-compliance not only jeopardizes a student’s standing within the program but may also lead to dismissal, underscoring the program’s commitment to maintaining the highest levels of healthcare delivery and patient care.

Upon being welcomed into the PBA PA Medicine program, candidates will need to affirm their comprehension and capability to meet these standards, with the provision for reasonable accommodations if necessary. This affirmation is a cornerstone of the admissions process, reflecting the candidate’s confidence in meeting these fundamental criteria.

We invite all prospective students to engage in open dialogue about the program’s technical standards to ensure a clear understanding and to evaluate their ability to meet these standards, with accommodations if required. In alignment with the principles of Section 504 of the 1973 Vocational Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, PBA PA Medicine is committed to ensuring that all candidates can meet these essential technical requirements, with or without adjustments.

Students who may need accommodations are encouraged to voluntarily disclose their needs and contact the PBA Student Success Center Office at 561-803-2063 for support, with additional policy information available in the PBA Graduate Catalog.

The P&A Committee will monitor students’ compliance with the technical standards throughout their program participation, ensuring ongoing adherence. Health Screenings and Immunizations (A3.07a, A3.17b)

The Palm Beach Atlantic University Physician Associate Medicine defines, publishes, makes readily available, and consistently applies a comprehensive policy on immunization, health screening, and related health requirements for students. This policy is rooted in the current guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and complies with state-specific mandates. Students admitted to the program and assigned to clinical sites are required to undergo toxicology screening for unprescribed and illegal substances at designated facilities, with associated costs covered by the student. The program ensures strict confidentiality for all health-related records, with verification conducted by a third-party service hired by PA Medicine, ensuring secure storage and limited access to authorized personnel only. Additionally, students must provide proof of immunity through vaccination records or laboratory evidence upon matriculation, with ongoing reviews and recommendations for further vaccinations as necessary before clinical rotations. The program mandates essential vaccines such as Hepatitis B, Influenza, MMR, Varicella, and Tdap based on CDC recommendations for healthcare workers. Furthermore, students must undergo a physical examination and demonstrate proof of health insurance coverage throughout their enrollment. This comprehensive approach aligns with the program’s commitment to student health and safety in compliance with ARC-PA standards.

Background Checks (A3.19)

Students entering the PBA Master of Medical Science, Physician Associate Medicine must undergo background checks, which are essential for working with minors and participating in clinical training at our partner sites. Students with a criminal history may face challenges completing the curriculum and advancing through the program, potentially impacting their ability to graduate. It is advisable for students with prior convictions to engage with a program advisor before matriculation for guidance.

Moreover, criminal background checks are imperative for obtaining licensure in Florida. The Florida Physician Assistant Board, along with other state medical boards and the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, considers criminal histories during licensure applications. Applicants and matriculants with convictions should engage directly with these entities before starting the program to confirm eligibility for licensure upon degree completion.
